History of Hopkins County
Hopkins County is located in Northeast Texas, with Sulphur Springs serving as its county seat and largest city. The county was established in 1846, the same year Texas formally transferred from the Republic era into its early period of statehood. Its name is associated with the family of David Hopkins, an early settler in the area. Agriculture played a central role in the county’s development, and Hopkins County later became particularly well known for its dairy industry.
Sulphur Springs developed as the county’s governmental and commercial center. One of the community’s most prominent landmarks is the Hopkins County Courthouse. The present courthouse was designed by architect J. Riely Gordon after an earlier courthouse was destroyed by fire in 1894. Completed in 1895, the Romanesque Revival building was constructed using red granite and contrasting sandstone and was later designated a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
Agriculture and dairy production have remained important parts of the county’s identity, a history preserved locally by the Southwest Dairy Museum. Today, Hopkins County combines rural communities and farmland with Sulphur Springs’ commercial activity and transportation connections.
