History of Hunt County
Settlement in what became Hunt County began around 1839, although the Mexican government had issued several land grants in the area a few years earlier. The Texas Legislature created Hunt County from portions of Fannin and Nacogdoches counties in 1846. The new county was named for Memucan Hunt, who had served the Republic of Texas as its first minister to the United States. Greenville was established as the county seat on land donated by McQuinney H. Wright and James G. Bourland. Early Hunt County developed primarily around small-scale farming. Despite land suitable for cotton cultivation, limited transportation connections initially prevented the county from developing the plantation economy found in some other parts of Texas. Farmers depended heavily on themselves and local trade because the nearest major market was approximately 120 miles away in Jefferson.
Transportation improvements eventually changed the area’s economy. Rail connections helped Greenville develop as a commercial and manufacturing center, while agriculture remained important throughout the surrounding countryside. Cotton became particularly significant, and Greenville was once home to a massive inland cotton compress. Today, Hunt County combines its agricultural heritage with manufacturing, education, aerospace and defense activity, and continued development associated with the broader North Texas region.
