Delta County History

Delta County was created by the Texas Legislature in 1870 and was named for its triangular shape, which resembles the Greek letter delta. The county was formed from portions of Hopkins County in Northeast Texas, with Cooper designated as the county seat. Early settlement in the area was driven largely by agriculture, particularly cotton farming, which became the foundation of the local economy during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The county experienced significant growth during the cotton boom years before facing economic challenges associated with fluctuations in agricultural markets and the Great Depression. Today, Delta County maintains its rural character while preserving many of its historic landmarks and traditions. The county courthouse in Cooper remains a prominent symbol of local government and community history. Two branches of the Sulphur River help define the county’s boundaries and geography, contributing to the area’s distinctive landscape. Modern Delta County continues to balance its agricultural heritage with recreational opportunities centered around Cooper Lake and other natural resources. Additional information can be found through the official county website and the county’s Wikipedia page.
